Kylian Mbappe will wear a mask when he returns to play at Euro 2024.

The France captain, 25, broke his nose during their first match of the tournament.

He avoided surgery, but after medical assessment it has been determined he will need to wear protective equipment to return to the field safely.

The Real Madrid forward was pictured during training on Thursday wearing a mask with the French national colors red, white and blue – the tricolor – and the logo of the French Football Federation (FFF).

France will play the Netherlands in the second match of Group D on Friday.

What happened to Mbappe?

Mbappé broke his nose on Monday during the opening match of the French tournament against Austria.

He suffered the injury in an aerial collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso, which left blood visible from his face and on his playing shirt.

Mbappe received medical treatment before leaving in the closing stages of the match in Dusseldorf and was replaced by Olivier Giroud.

What are UEFA’s rules on masks?

UEFA has very specific rules for clothing and other equipment worn during play.

It states: “Medical equipment (e.g., head protection, face masks, casts, knee pads or knee braces, elbow pads): Medical equipment worn on the playing field must be one color and free of team and manufacturer identification.

“Items worn on the legs and arms must be the same color as the corresponding playwear item (e.g. elbow pads or tape used on the arm in the same color as shirt sleeves and knee pads in the same color as shorts).”

All equipment must be approved by UEFA, so it is not possible for Mbappé to enter the pitch with a mask that does not comply with those rules. The FFF will have to ask UEFA which mask it wants to wear as well.

On Wednesday, Mbappe teased the prospect of taking part in France’s second group stage match with a cryptic message on social media.

“Without risks there are no victories,” he wrote on Instagram, prompting speculation that he would be available.

“Everything is going in the right direction,” Didier Deschamps said at his press conference on Thursday.

“After this big shock he had, with all its consequences, of course. “Yesterday, as you saw, he was able to go out and do some activities. And that will also be the case tonight.

A win will see them move on to the next stage of the tournament. They play Poland in their last group match in Dortmund on Tuesday.
