Analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data highlights state-specific trends in work hours and productivity.

A recent study from AI productivity platform Plus Docs, which analyzed the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), found that work hours in New York increased by 2.4% for the period 2022-2023, accompanied of a decrease of 1.8%. in the field of labor productivity.

Nationally, average hours worked increased by 1.7%, while labor productivity rose modestly by 1.0%. This puts New York above the national average in increasing work hours, but runs counter to the overall trend of increasing productivity.

Commenting on the findings, Daniel Li, CEO and co-founder of Plus Docs, said: “The states with the lowest working hours often emerge as the most productive due to several key factors: they prioritize efficiency, implement advanced technologies and place an emphasis on employee well-being and work-life balance. By doing this, they maximize output without extending working hours and ensure that their employees are well rested and highly motivated, leading to greater overall productivity.

“Progressive labor policies and innovative workplace practices in these states contribute to an environment where productivity is determined by the quality of work rather than the amount of hours worked. This holistic approach not only increases productivity, but also improves employee satisfaction and well-being.”

Plus Docs’ findings suggest that New York’s approach could benefit from a reevaluation to align more closely with states that have successfully increased productivity without extending work hours, thus promoting a more balanced and efficient work environment.
