Anne Hathaway remembers being a “chronically stressed young woman.”
Anne Hathaway broke through in Hollywood with her quirky and sweet character The Princess’s Diarybut off camera her early career was fraught with stress.
“As a young woman who was previously chronically stressed, I remember thinking one day, ‘You’re taking this for granted. You take your life for granted,” Hathaway, 41, said Our weekly’s exclusive preview of The New York Times Magazine’s debut episode of Podcast ‘The Interview’which falls entirely on Saturday, April 27.
Hathaway recalled saying to herself, “You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky, and that would mean the light goes out.”
As a veteran actress in her 40s, Hathaway has tried to overcome those fears. “So when I notice the old instincts coming up, I tell myself, ‘You’re not going to die stressed,'” she explained.
The Oscar winner noted that as a young woman she “didn’t know how to breathe yet,” and recalled that this was “very complicated” for her.
When asked what specifically had her stressed out about in the past, Hathaway replied, “The simple answer is literally everything. I was very in my head about a lot of things.”
Hathaway delved deeper into her past quirks and stressors during her podcast episode, which can also be seen in The New York Times Magazine. Plus, she teased The princess diaries 3 and any easter egg fan will notice The idea of you.

When is ‘Princess Diaries 3’ coming?
News reporter David Marchese asked if “something” was “cooking” with the next installment of the Disney film franchise, to which Hathaway replied, “Yes.”
She teased, “I don’t think it would be fun” to tell fans more details.
Does she have a favorite project from the past?
“I’d rather look at the horizon than look back at what I’ve done,” the actress said when asked about her film history. “I don’t watch my movies. I love that so many of my films are the ones you cuddle with; I’m aware of that aspect of it, but the concept of having a name is weird. The idea of having a name that means something that could qualify as an Easter egg is not a concept I think about much.”
‘The Idea of You’ has an easter egg about her hometown
In the 2024 film, Hathaway’s character, Solène, is described as “a people pleaser from New Jersey,” which she says she “might have suggested.”
“I guess I’m a former people pleaser from New Jersey. The reason I was drawn to acting is mainly because it was an outlet for expression that I couldn’t find on my own,” Hathaway said of the film nod. “And in the space between feeling so connected when I was acting and so lost when I wasn’t, you try to find your way, and one of the ways you find your way is, ‘Oh, if I do this do, that will make someone else happy, and maybe that’s what I should do. ”
She added: “It takes a long time to say, ‘That doesn’t really matter if you don’t know who you are.’ Unless you just want an identity that’s about pleasing people, which I think is completely valid. But I’m not that nice.”
Age is just a number
Hathaway was excited to play against a guy in his 40s The idea of you but in reality does not consider reaching that age as an achievement.
“I don’t take it that seriously. There are so many other things that I consider milestones,” she said. “I don’t normally talk about it, but I’ve been sober for over five years. That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift.”
Does she dwell on her past stress?
“My goal is to heal it and not relive it. I’m not trying to be evasive. I don’t spend much time thinking about it because I feel like I’ve found a window and climbed through it. I work hard just to be present,” says the devil wears Prada actress explained. “Like I said, I’m more grateful. I’m more into myself. I’m less afraid of things not happening. You know, the time when I was an emerging adult was a different time. We weren’t having the kind of conversations we were having now.”
Adam Sandler Stayed Upbeat While Working on ‘The Idea of You’
“When I was making The idea of you“I was so spoiled staying in a beautiful home in Atlanta, Georgia that was much bigger than I needed,” she recalled. “I came home from work and was alone in this house, and it gave me the heebie-jeebies.”
Hathaway realized that she felt uncomfortable because “there was no laughter in the house.” To combat the silence, she started listening to stand-up specials, including Sandler’s “100% Fresh.”
“As extraordinary, beloved and iconic as Adam Sandler is, I think he is underappreciated,” the actress revealed. “I can quote you every line BillyMadison And Happy Gilmore And The wedding singer.”
Hathaway noted that she feels “much more comfortable talking about Adam Sandler, who I have never met, than talking about what makes me tick.” She concluded, “I just have to figure out how to practice.”
