Western clothing is trending right now, but for Lela Rose it’s an eternal style: “I grew up in Texas, went to school in Colorado and now spend a lot of time in Wyoming; the West has always influenced me,” she says. Her phone contains thousands of photos of ranch cowgirls from the 1940s and 1950s, which she first started saving in 2012. (“That’s as far back as my phone rings,” Rose said, laughing.) And a year after opening the Lela Rose Ranch in Jackson, where the designer owns a home, she decided it was finally time to make a to create your own western collection.

There are split skirts with concho details and goatskin fringes. Dresses are available in paisley bandana prints. Shirts have intricate lace inserts. There are several shirts available with floral prints that look less like garden flowers and more like wildflowers. Rose keeps these from veering into cosplay territory by sticking to a muted palette: most of the clothing is white or black, while a select few have accents of moody blues and reds. “It’s very advanced,” she said.

That’s important: Rose’s brand (and price) attracts what she describes as a “guest of” clientele, or customers who buy for special occasions. Her take on Western clothing can therefore not only be intended for the relaxed life at home. Plus, you have to take geography into account: her brand is based in Manhattan. “They’re very sophisticated, they’re things that can work in an urban environment but really have a Western feel in a cultured way,” Rose said of the collection. “It’s a big deal for that woman who is living a ‘guest of’ life, but maybe she’s a guest at something in New York City or maybe she’s going to a wedding out West.” (More likely than you might think. Like Western clothing, country weddings are becoming increasingly popular.)

Some items feel like they’re meant more for city life than others, like dresses with full skirts or sequined knits. Rose has embraced knits in recent seasons. “Our customer is absolutely crazy about the knits. I think the reason for this is because they are so comfortable and we do them in a way that makes them so flattering,” she said. Will Lela Rose become a brand as rooted in Park Avenue as it is in Park City? As Rose lives more of her life in a mountain time zone, it seems the aesthetic influence will be permanent.
