Ryan Gosling reveals his daughters' nickname for Emily Blunt

Ryan Goslings daughters have a special nickname for it Emily Blunt – and it’s a callback to one of her most famous film roles.

“My children are calling [Emily] Mary Poppins,” Gosling, 43, revealed on the Tuesday, April 23, episode of the Today show. “They say, ‘Are you working with Mary Poppins today?’ Yes yes I am.”

Blunt, 41 – who played the title role of the magical nanny in 2018 Mary Poppins returns – and Gosling both share two daughters of the same age with their respective partners: Blunt and husband Johannes Krasinski are parents to Hazel, 9, and Violet, 7, while Gosling and longtime partner Eva Mendes share Esmerelda, 9, and Amada, 7.

According to Blunt, their little ones’ admiration goes both ways. She said her daughters “love” Gosling a lot, especially for his role as Ken in the summer 2023 hit. Barbie.

“Actually my eldest [Violet] — It’s the first movie she’s shown interest in, and it has nothing to do with me. It’s all about Ryan,” she joked. However, when Gosling responded it was more about “Ken, really,” Blunt had to agree.

“It’s Ken,” she admitted. “They are fascinated by what his hair looks like in real life. That was a question I got a lot.” (Gosling bleached his hair platinum blonde for the role.)

Gosling and Blunt will star in the upcoming film The autumn man, which hits theaters on May 3. The film follows battle-scarred stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) as he returns to the entertainment world when the star of a major studio film suddenly disappears. Blunt plays his ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno, who also happens to be the director of the film in which Colt is cast.

Although Gosling’s own nickname for Blunt is “Emily Stunty Blunt,” he said Entertainment tonight Tuesday that the actress has an innate whimsical element similar to her 2018 character.

“She just brings, you know, she brings that blunt force, she brings the magic, she just brings it Mary Poppins,” he explained. “And takes whatever it is out of her bag. She rises from heaven, she pulls out all the tricks in her acting bag, she makes the magic. Then she goes and helps other people in other movies and you’re like, “Was that real?”

Blunt, meanwhile, has endless respect for Gosling’s talent.

“I could actually write a laundry list of things I admire and adore about Ryan,” she said AND. I think he’s a completely unique talent and he’s the best and he’s endlessly funny and ridiculously smart and kind… You’re the nicest.”

Although Blunt and Gosling are clearly good friends, they joked about their 2023 films: Oppenheimer And Barbie, which went head-to-head at the box office last summer during a presentation at the Oscars in March. (Both were nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category, but… Emma Stone and Blunt’s Oppenheimer Co-star Cillian Murphy took home the win.)

“I’m just happy that we can finally put this ‘Barbenheimer’ rivalry aside,” Gosling told Blunt on stage, to which Blunt joked: “The way this awards season has gone, it wasn’t that big of a rivalry. Just let it go !”

“It’s true. You guys are doing really well, you know? CongratulationsGosling replied by Christopher Nolan biopic about an atomic bomb, which ultimately took home Best Picture that evening. “But I think I’ve sort of figured out why it’s called ‘Barbenheimer’ and not ‘Oppenarbie.’ You’re in the back because you’ve been driving Barbies coat tails all summer.”
