Eight Republican senators, including JD Vance, Mike Lee and Tommy Tuberville, have pledged not to work with Democrats on matters unrelated to national security.

Here is the senators’ statement:

The letter was also signed by MAGA Senators Marsha Blackburn, Rick Scott, Marco Rubio, Roger Marshall and Eric Schmitt.

None of the eight names on the letter were a surprise. Trump is not as popular with Republicans in the Senate as he is in the House of Representatives, but he does have his fans in the Senate of Congress.

The letter is a political gesture that means nothing in practice. The Republicans who signed the letter are not known for bipartisanship and cooperation, and the document was a grand political statement that reflected the tantrum within MAGA over Trump’s conviction.

The federal government had nothing to do with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s conviction and prosecution of Trump.

Look for Republicans to throw more of these empty tantrums and gestures as they try to appease and appeal to an audience of a newly convicted felon.
