USMNT player ratings vs. Colombia: The US has posted its worst performance in the Gregg Berhalter era

The United States men’s national team was destroyed by Colombia on Saturday in an international friendly, eliminating any current momentum as preparations continue ahead of the Copa America. The US managed to close a 2-0 deficit but conceded three goals in the second half to complete the embarrassing scoreline. Here’s how the US performed:

Goalkeeper: Matt Turner

Jhon Arias’ opener was struck so quickly, but you never like to be beaten at the near post. He then conceded a bicycle kick Rafael Santos Borre remained open. Just a bit of bad luck. The second one might have been salvageable, but I can’t blame him for it. His defense let him down on the third goal, and his team let him down on the other two.
Rating: 4

Right back: Joe Scally

You can’t beat his effort, but Joe Scally had a tough match with Liverpool star Luis Diaz. For the most part, he held his own. He probably should have stayed with Borre for the second goal, but all in all it wasn’t as bad a performance as he seems to replace Sergino Dest.
Rating: 4.5

Center defender: Chris Richards

He should have done better in the air, but he wasn’t terrible. Normally he was aware of what was going on around him and made sure spaces were covered, but things just didn’t fall his way and faded away as the game went on.
Rating: 4

Center defender: Tim Ream

I’m not going to blame him for that opening goal. Tim Ream was in a strong position to block the shot, he made it difficult, but the ball still found its way in. However, he lacked the agility to stay with Colombia’s fast players and became increasingly worse as the match progressed.
Rating: 4

Left behind: Antonee Robinson

His sliding touch on the ball led to Colombia’s opener, but Antonee Robinson cannot be blamed. He did well to at least not let it happen, and his teammates should have been there to remove the danger. Delivered a brilliant ball Folarin Balogun moments later. It cost the US almost a third due to sloppy play, and just like then, it was played at half speed.
Rating: 3.5

Defensive midfielder: Johnny Cardoso

He denied Colombia’s second-place finish with a thoughtful challenge, but his glaring lack of points in Colombia’s third-place finish was alarming. He has completely left Richard Rios, who drifted into the center of the penalty area and had a radius of about ten meters around him, with no one around. That doesn’t happen with Tyler Adams in that situation.
Rating: 2

Central midfielder: Weston McKennie

His positioning was a bit all over the place, making it difficult for him to really get into the flow. He did a fine job when it came to returning the ball and playing patiently, but he’s someone you want to see be a factor going forward.
Rating: 4

Central midfielder Gio Reyna

His slight hesitation in Colombia’s opener cost him dearly as he could have reacted to clear the danger. He wasn’t as involved on the ball as we would expect, and rust was visible, but he did well in tight spaces to keep things moving.
Rating: 4

Right winger: Tim Weah

Silent… until he wasn’t. Scored a great goal in the 58th minute with a beautiful shot into the penalty area on a ball from Balogun. Ruined it with a silly turnover that led to Colombia’s fourth-place finish.
Rating: 4

Forward: Folarin Balogun

The axis Monaco Humans posed a threat early on. He turned the ball quickly, made aggressive runs. He recorded an assist early in the second half with a nice weighted ball to Tim Weah to pull one back.
Rating: 5.5

Left winger: Christian Pulisic

Apart from a lucky header that threatened, he didn’t do much in terms of testing the Colombian defence. A solid pass here and there, after which he was taken off the field at the break after a 45-minute shift.
Rating: 5

Subs

Haji Wright
He came close early in the second half with a header. Was lively and made strong, diagonal runs.
Rating: 5

Cameron Carter-Vickers
Questionable defense in Colombia’s fourth, with the corner given by going inside. His poor feeling for the ball caused the fifth goal.
Rating: 2

Malik Tilman
Colombia were in full control by the time he came on and scored zero positives influence.
Rating: 4

Yunus Musah
I took an early hit and never looked settled.
Rating: 5

Ricardo Pepi
I had a front row seat to Colombia’s great attack. Was just a spectator.
Judgement: N/A

Luca de la Torre
Late sub who never got involved in less than 10 minutes.

Manager Gregg Berhalter

The US boss said it is not a lesson learned, but a wake-up call. I’m not saying this is a result that should put him first as it’s a friendly, but it couldn’t have gone much worse. It was incredibly sloppy and there are no excuses. He didn’t have this team ready. They better put more effort into it Brazil Wednesday, otherwise they will go into the Copa America with the lowest expectations.
