‘NCIS: Origins’: Everything You Need to Know About the Prequel Series
The NCIS the universe will expand in 2024 thanks to the upcoming prequel seriesNCIS: Origins.
CBS announced on Friday, January 7, that the show about Leroy Jethro Gibbs (formerly played by Mark Harmon) Origin Story received a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season.
“We are excited and honored to continue the company’s expansion NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way,” said CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a press release at the time. “Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon’s return to CBS to tell the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: Originswhich will build on this character’s rich legacy while reintroducing favorite characters and meeting new ones.”
Although Harmon stepped back from the role of Gibbs in 2021 after 18 years, his character’s story is far from over. “This is really the making of Leroy Jethro Gibbs,” co-showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal And David J. North added. “And even the most dedicated NCIS fans will discover they don’t know the whole story.”

What is ‘NCIS: Origins’ about?
The prequel takes viewers back to 1991 “before the events of NCIS“As young Leroy, Jethro Gibbs begins his career as a newly created special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks,” the logline reads.
Will Mark Harmon appear in ‘NCIS: Origins’?
Harmon will not reprise his role as Gibbs on camera, but he will narrate the series. The actor will also serve as one of the executive producers alongside his son Sean Harmon. Sean previously played Young Gibbs NCIS but will not be portraying the character this time.
“The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both from watching my father play the role and from having the honor of playing young Gibbs myself,” Sean said in a press release from January. “I’ve always felt there was a story worth telling about his earlier years, so I’m thrilled to step into a producing role alongside Gina, David and my father as we tell this story and revealing a new side of this beloved character.”
Which ‘NCIS’ characters will be featured?
In addition to a Young Gibbs, fans meet the younger version of Mike Franks (originally played by Muse Watson). TVLine reported in January that a young special agent Vera Strickland came from Roma mafiaappears in season 1.
Who are the producers of ‘NCIS: Origins’?
Besides Mark and Sean, NCIS: Origins‘co-showrunners Monreal and North will serve as executive producers on the project. Monreal and North previously worked together on NCIS for 10 years. North is currently the co-showrunner of NCIS and an executive producer with Mark on the franchise’s longest-running series.
Who plays young Jethro?
CBS announced this on March 5 Austin Stowell is cast as the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Stowell previously played in The secret life of the American teenager, Public morality, Keep breathing, A friend of the family And Three women.
Who has been cast in the prequel?
Alongside Stowell as young Gibbs, Mariel Molino was cast as the female lead for the series on March 15.
Molino will play Special Agent Lala Dominguez, a former Marine, who will star alongside Gibbs. “When a troubled Leroy Jethro Gibbs joins her team, the ensuing story between these two enigmatic outsiders is filled with sparks and twists that will keep audiences guessing,” the character description reads via Deadline.
Nearly a week after Molino’s casting, Kyle Schmid was added to the show. He will play the young version of Mike Franks, who will lead the special agents of NIS Camp Pendleton.
On April 18, TV line reported that Robert Taylor plays Ralph Waite, the father of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Daniel Bellomy And Caleb Martin Foote were also cast in recurring guest roles.
When will ‘NCIS: Origins’ premiere?
CBS has not yet announced the exact premiere date for season 1 of the series NCIS: Originsbut it is planned for the 2024-2025 lineup and a fall release.
